FAQ about gender selection
What is the risk of mistake in sex selection?
Sex selection by PGD method is the most accurate method of predicting the gender of the future baby. The accuracy of PGD for sex selection method is 99% (the possibility of mistake is 1%).
What is the chance to get pregnant at one attempt?
The efficacy of the whole procedure IVF+sex selection is around 50%. This means that one attempt may be not enough to achieve the pregnancy.

How long does the whole procedure take?
The whole process includes ovary stimulation, egg retrieval, gender selection and embryo transefer; lasts 2,5 weeks and starts from day 2 of menstrual cycle of the female partner. The treatment protocol is planned at the initial consultation. It is possible to undergo stimulation of ovaries in the home country (1,5 weeks) under control of a local doctor and come second time to AVA-Peter only for egg pick up, fertilization, gender selection and embryo transfer (only 8 days).
Can we come only once?
No, this is not possible.
We always start with an initial consultation. This is a part of our philosophy, which emphasises a personal aproach to each patient at each stage of treatment. We have a "one doctor – one patient” principle. This means that the same doctor whom you see at your initial consultation will co-ordinate the entire treatment process, including timing, ovary stimulation, egg retrieval, gender selection and embryo transefer.
The waiting time for this initial visit is 1 – 2 months.
For the first appointment you will need only one day , but it is naturally a very pleasant idea to combine your visit with a nice long weekend in St. Petersburg.
If you would like to book an initial consultation, please send us an e-mail to info@avapeter.com and we will offer you several possibilities of dates to choose from.
We are healthy couple and already have a child/children. Why should we need any medication?
Unlike the natural cycle, hormone stimulation allows for several eggs to mature. It is important to have statistically sufficient number of eggs to find high quality embryos of desired sex.

What are the complications?
Hyperstimulation syndrome. Hyperstimulation syndrome is an excessive reaction of the ovaries to hormonal stimulation. The ovaries produce too many follicles, which results in excessive female hormone production. Hyperstimulation is characterized by pain in the lower abdomen, nausea, presence of free fluid in the abdomen and hypertrophy of the ovaries. Hyperstimulation syndrome may require inpatient treatment.
Multiple pregnancy. The multiple pregnancy rate after IVF is markedly high and averages 20-30%, if 2 embryos were transferred. Elective single embryo transfer helps to minimize multiple pregnancy rate.
Ectopic pregnancy. Though an embryo is transferred into the uterus, extopic pregnancy may occur. The incidence of extopic pregnancies after IVF does not differ from the ectopic pregnancy rate in population.
Spontaneous abortions. By the natural conception 12-15% pregnancies end with miscarriage. The risk of pregnancy loss after IVF procedure increases only slightly, due to advanced maternal age.
Risks associated with invasive intervention. The follicular puncture can potentially cause bleeding and inflammation. These complications occur only seldomly however.
